Hole Contests

Closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt and straightest drive on one hole of a round, with a purse from the trip buy-in pot and a card that every group can write on from the scoring screen.

What a hole contest is

A hole contest belongs to one hole of one round. It has a game (closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, straightest drive), a purse, and a card: the list of claims groups have posted as they came through. The newest claim that has not been voided is the holder, exactly like the name on the marker card on the green.

Setting one up

From the dashboard. Open the round and use Add contest in the Hole contests card. Pick the game, the hole, the purse, and where the purse comes from:

  • The trip buy-in pot (default). The purse counts against the pot in the trip accountant’s Money in Play overview, next to the trip-pot tournaments, so the pot always reconciles.
  • Its own money. The purse is listed as a separate pot, the way a fixed-purse tournament is.

From the portal. Any player on the trip can add a contest from the round page (Hole contests → Add), so a “let’s play CTP on 7 for $75” decided on the first tee gets recorded without the organizer.

Posting a claim on the course

When a group reaches the hole, the scoring screen shows a chip under the hole number with the game and who holds the card (“CTP · Dino 6’ 2” · $75”). Tap it, tap the player’s name, and optionally enter the distance and a note. The same sheet is on the round page under Hole contests, with an I got it / Beat it button.

  • Distance is optional. A tape, a rangefinder, or the Measure app that comes with iPhone all work. Adding a number tells the next group what to beat.
  • A measured claim has to beat the holder’s measured distance. Closer for the pin and straightest drive, longer for drives and putts. A tie keeps the holder. A claim that does not beat it is refused with the distance to beat.
  • An unmeasured claim replaces anything, as a written name does on the course. If the groups are measuring, everyone should measure.
  • Voiding. The player named, whoever posted the claim, or an organizer can void a claim from the claim history. The previous name goes back on the card. Voided claims stay in the history.

Locking the winner and the money

Once the round is complete, any player can Lock winner from the round page; organizers can do it at any time from the portal or the dashboard. Locking freezes the card and writes one payout for the holder to the trip’s payouts, so it appears in:

  • the Settlement preview and the optimized transactions, under the winner’s tournament winnings with the contest and hole named;
  • the trip accountant’s Money in Play overview, under Hole contests, with the amount paid out.

A contest can be reopened from the dashboard. That removes its payout and makes the card live again; claims are kept. A contest marked Settled separately stays visible everywhere but its payout is left out of settlement, for a pot that was handed over in cash on the green.
