Setting Up Competitions
Learn how to create and manage competitions within your golf events.
What is a Competition?
A competition is a scoring format applied to one or more rounds within an event. A single event can have multiple competitions running simultaneously, allowing you to:
- Run a main stroke play competition alongside a skins game
- Track both gross and net scores separately
- Create team competitions in addition to individual standings
Creating a Competition
1. Navigate to Your Event
From your dashboard, select the event you want to add a competition to.
2. Add a Competition
Click Add Competition in the Competitions section of your event.
3. Configure Basic Settings
- Name: Give your competition a descriptive name (e.g., “Gross Stroke Play” or “Team Best Ball”)
- Description: Optional details about the competition
4. Choose a Format
Select from the available scoring formats:
Individual Formats
| Format | Description |
|---|---|
| Stroke Play | Traditional total strokes scoring |
| Stableford | Points-based scoring relative to par |
| Match Play | Hole-by-hole head-to-head competition |
| Skins | Win money/points for lowest score on each hole |
| Nassau | Three bets: front 9, back 9, and total |
Team Formats
| Format | Description |
|---|---|
| Best Ball | Best score among team members counts |
| Scramble | All players hit from the best shot location |
| Shamble | Best drive, then individual play to finish |
| Alternate Shot | Partners alternate shots on each hole |
| Ryder Cup | Combined format with multiple match types |
5. Configure Scoring Options
Net vs Gross
- Gross Scoring: Raw stroke totals, no handicap adjustment
- Net Scoring: Scores adjusted by playing handicap
Handicap Allowance
Set the percentage of course handicap to use:
- 100%: Full handicap (standard for most competitions)
- 85%: Common for match play
- 90%: USGA recommended for four-ball
- Custom: Any percentage you prefer
6. Team Settings (if applicable)
For team competitions:
- Team Size: Number of players per team (2, 4, etc.)
- Counting Scores: How many scores count per hole

Best Practices
Running Multiple Competitions
- Use clear, descriptive names to avoid confusion
- Consider running both gross and net competitions for inclusivity
- Add fun side games like skins to increase engagement
Handicap Settings
- For competitive tournaments, use 100% handicap allowance
- For casual events, consider lower percentages to favor better players less
- Match play typically uses reduced handicap percentages
Communication
- Share public leaderboard links with participants
- Update players when cuts are applied
- Announce final standings promptly
Troubleshooting
Scores Not Updating
If leaderboard scores seem incorrect:
- Verify all hole scores have been entered
- Check that scorecards are completed
- Use the Recalculate function to refresh totals
Position Ties
When players are tied:
- Players share the same position
- The next position is skipped (e.g., two 1st place, then 3rd)
- Tiebreakers can be configured in competition settings
